Childcare Costs Tax Deductible in 2023
The United States federal government provides options to help defray childcare costs, including Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (DCFSA) and the Dependent Care Tax Credit. These options aim to ease the financial burden of daycare for families and support the economy.
Employees can fund DCFSA to cover childcare costs.
Contributions are made before taxes, reducing federal, state, and Social Security/Medicare withholdings.
Eligible childcare options include daycare, preschool, day camps, before and after-school programs, and more.
Allows you to deduct up to 35% of eligible childcare expenses paid during the year.
The maximum available credit is $1,050 for one child and $2,100 for two or more.
You can claim up to $3,000 of costs for one child and up to $6,000 for two or more.
The credit is non-refundable, meaning it reduces your tax liability but does not provide a refund if your tax due is already offset.
Both the Dependent Care FSA and Dependent Care Tax Credit are applicable only to childcare costs incurred before the child turns 13, except in cases where the child is disabled.
Payments for siblings under 19 are not considered qualifying expenses.
In summary, childcare costs can be tax-deductible through Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts and the Dependent Care Tax Credit, providing financial relief for families with eligible childcare expenses.
